“My name is George W. Shannon II, a graduate of Vanguard High School’s Class of 2007 and Florida State University. Although the journey to where I am today has not been easy, my partnership with the Take Stock in Children program has alleviated some of the worry as I prepared for college and ultimately, worked my way through the collegiate curriculum. [The TSIC team] has been ready and willing to help in any way possible. To them, the TSIC program was not only a way for students to afford college, but it was more of a family. Everyone who was a part of this team ensured that each student excelled in the academics during high school and were well cared for during the collegiate years.

After being accepted into the College of Music at Florida State University, I set out to become a music educator; thus, giving back to the community what has been given to me. Of course, it had not occurred to me how I was to afford such a costly major; yet, I knew that it was my passion to teach. Now that I look back over the years, I can say that the journey was well worth the thrills. Sometimes, the road less traveled is the only way that leads to success. On April 30, 2011 I will graduate from the College of Music with the Bachelor’s of Music Education degree after which it is my intention to teach at a public high school. I then plan to return for a masters degree and ultimately, a PhD in Music Education of DMA in Wing Band Conducting. None of this would have been possible without the TSIC program.

Everyone has the ability to succeed; never give up!”
